The reason we all shy from the podium and prefer taking a back seat while others give a TED like speech is, “What if they don’t like me?” and nothing more. No one wants to be embarrassed, not to mention in public. So, what do you need to do so that your audience stays with you all along the speech?

Learn about the invisible rules
Invisible rules? Yes, you heard it right. There are rules that each gender uniquely ascribes to. Males and females are figuratively from different planets and this you will know when you indulge them in a conversation. Men like problem solving situations while women prefer warmer and more indulging topics. Be a darling and make a presentation that is a cocktail of the two.

Communication styles
When presenting, you want to be understood and that is why you should master the communication styles that best fit your listeners. In most cases than not, your audience will comprise of both male and female. For this reason you will have to shape your presentation to suit all. When you need to prompt a question to the audience you must realize that when involving males, a commanding language is quite appropriate, which may not apply to females who expect to be persuaded and encouraged to contribute.

Do some audience adaptation
Just like the customer is always right, viewers hold the same position in public speaking. Those who attend to listen to you always come because they have an interest with what you have to offer and that is why you should try to impress them. Do your homework beforehand and research well on the topic. That does not mean that you cannot defy their expectations, in fact, doing so will wow them as they would have learnt something that they had never thought of.
